Obasanjo And Buhari Hold Secret Closed Door Meeting To Discuss Saraki, Ministers, Others

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, met with President Buhari in New York City behind closed doors to allegedly discuss affairs of the nation bordering on Saraki’s trial, and the soon-to-be-released ministerial list.

Top ranking Nigerians including Obasanjo had their reservations about things going on in the country including the appointment of Buhari’s kitchen cabinet that was considered concentrated in one part of the country, the proposed ministerial list, squabbles with the leadership of the Senate, especially Senate President Bukola Saraki, leading to speculations of plans and counter moves to effect changes in the Red Chamber.

Although no one was able to go near the venue of the meeting between the two Nigerian leaders, Obasanjo, it was said, believes that it is his duty to protect the present government. It was, therefore, considered a tactical move on the part of the former President to have ‘cornered’ President Buhari in New York.

Obasanjo reportedly met President Buhari at Millennium Hotel Plaza in New York while he was there to attend the United Nations General Assembly meeting of Heads of States.

Obasanjo was said to have quickly moved to the 36th floor of the hotel, where the secret meeting lasted for one hour. Former Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, who walked out of the elevator with Buhari, was denied entry when the meeting between the two leaders commenced.

According to a source, some of those who were successful already knew themselves because after the security checks on them, words got back to them on what was going on. Those who could not make the list are, however, hopeful to make ambassadorial positions or headships of parastatals when the President decides to make further appointments.

The source alleged huge plans against the Senate President, following views in several powerful quarters about his ‘non-palatable’ conduct in the recent past.

The source said: “Don’t forget that Saraki, as the Senate President, ran to Obasanjo for his intervention when it was obvious that the party was against him. The President had refused to see him since his emergence as President of the Senate. Obviously, they want Saraki to negotiate from a position of weakness.

I can tell you that the alleged harassment of Saraki in Ilorin was well co-ordinated if not out rightly organised by the party. There would be more protests on the street tomorrow and Tuesday when the Senate is expected to resume. There is just no way that the Senate can keep Saraki as the President. All steps are being taken to get Saraki and Ekweremadu out of the positions meant for the party.”

But another source said some senators confided in Obasanjo as one of the fathers of the nation on the likely consequences of the steps taken to oust Saraki and Ekweremadu. By the time Obasanjo was briefed on what the senators could possibly do, Obasanjo had no alternative than to meet with Buhari so as to mediate and ensure that Nigeria’s democraxy remains intact and unshaken.
