Ugandan Man Spends 20 Years In Death Row For Murder Of Man Found To Be Alive

Mpagi Edward Edmary

In 1982, a Ugandan taxi driver named Mpagi Edward Edmary, was given a cruel death sentence for the murder of his neighbour. However, it was later discovered that not only was Edward an innocent man, there hadn’t even been a murder in the first place.

Edward was framed for the murder after a land dispute between families in the village got out of hand.

According to the innocent man, witnesses who were bribed to say they had seen him kill the man and dispose of the body gave false testimonies in court. He spent the next 20 years in Kampala’s notorious Luzira prison and was only released when his family proved that the dead man had been hiding all along in another part of the country.

An interview with a BBC reporter showed that Edward’s health is not in the best of conditions. His eyesight had suffered due to the constant glare of his cell wall, whilst a recent stroke has left him partially paralysed.

Nonetheless, the ever vibrant Edward remains an outspoken campaigner against the death penalty and still makes regular visits to convicts on death row to talk to them about their predicament and help them make peace with it.
